Economic Dynamism and Abundance Panel | The New Enlightenment Conference 2026
Why has economic growth slowed across much of Europe? What conditions allow innovation and entrepreneurship to flourish? And how can societies create the freedom, confidence and opportunity needed for long-term prosperity?
This panel on Economic Dynamism and Abundance brings together Sam Bowman, Julia Willemyns, and Dr Ryan Streeter, chaired by Victoria Barbary, to explore the economic, political and cultural foundations of growth. The discussion examines the barriers slowing innovation across Europe and the UK, from planning systems and housing shortages to energy costs, labour market regulation, access to capital, and technology policy.
The panel also considers the human side of dynamism: the values, behaviours and institutions that encourage people to build, create, take risks and pursue opportunity. Drawing on lessons from Adam Smith, modern economic history, and examples ranging from Sweden and Denmark to Texas and China, speakers debate what is required to build more dynamic economies in an era of technological change and growing global competition.
