California is an American Nightmare – and the Future of the US Left
The once-Golden State is home to the two leading contenders for the 2028 Democratic nomination. It’s also a basketcase.
Recent electoral victories by the Marxist-Leninists of the Democratic Socialists of America have dominated political conversation in both major parties in the United States.
Although clearly shocking, however, the chances of a DSA candidate making it to the White House remain slim, at least for now. The Real Clear Politics average puts Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York congresswoman and the only bona-fide American-born socialist under 80 with a strong media presence, at only 9 per cent in the polling on who could become the next Democratic nominee for president.
Indeed, Democrats seem to prefer California to New York. Astonishingly, in that same poll, nearly half of Democrats name either former vice-president Kamala Harris (once a senator from the state and the failed candidate from the last presidential election) or California governor Gavin Newsom as their favoured candidate for the 2026 election.
